Croatia & Montenegro

Tours to Croatia-MontenegroThis small group tour combines one of the latest ‘must see’ destinations, Croatia, with a wonderful little country under most folks’ radar, Montenegro – a hidden gem if there ever was one.

We begin our adventure in Dubrovnik, Croatia, as we board our mega-yacht, M/S Splendid, and begin our exciting 7-Day Island Hopping Cruise through Croatia’s Dalmatia Coast

Week two is on land, exploring the wonders and mysteries of lovely Montenegro. Transported by deluxe motor coach, we begin our journey by climbing the scenic old mountain road to “Old Montenegro,” and each day a new adventure awaits.

Cuba

Tour Cuba

If you have been wanting to see Cuba, now is the time to do it, before it becomes spoiled by a rush of American tourists.

Come with me… experience the quirky, sometimes unpredictable and chaotic, yet enterprising life of the Cuban people. Witness their spirit and ingenuity. Marvel at what they can do amidst the crumbling infrastructure. Travel the nearly deserted highways through the gorgeous countryside, with cowboys on horseback, and horse-drawn carts interspersed among the classic cars, trucks and buses.

This is a Catch the Wind tour you won’t want to miss, especially now, before Cuba changes, and before the onrushing crowds ruin it.

France

Tours to FranceDuring the two weeks of our small group tour of France, we will discover the beautiful Minervois villages and the fascinating Languedoc region of South France.

This tour is a balance of relaxation and discovery. The region is rich in history (primarily Roman Colonization, and the Cathar movement, which provoked the Albigensian Crusade) and wine production.

Greece & Turkey
Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Can you imagine two weeks immersed in two of the most exotic and archeologically rich civilizations of the world? You can experience it all on our small group tour of Greece and Turkey.

Our tour of Greece will combine conventional cruising with private yachting aboard the 25-cabin Harmony V mega yacht. We will visit the famous islands of Mykonos and Santorini along with many of the smaller, beautiful islands.

An optional small group land tour of the Pelloponnese is available for touring classical sites like Olympia, Delphi and Meteora.

Our small group tour of Turkey includes the enchanting city of Istanbul, a cruise on the Bosphorus strait, and a visit to the Cappadocia region.

Istanbul is a unique city combining Eastern and Western cultures. It is set in an amazingly beautiful location that everyone should visit at least once.

Cappadocia is a stunning area of other-worldly rock formations, subterranean churches and underground dwellings.

Ireland

Tours to IrelandFor two weeks our small group tour of Ireland will explore the Emerald Isle, escorted in our luxurious and spacious motor coach.

We will discover the myriad beautiful, charming and mysterious sights, sounds, and tastes of the Emerald Isle, making a wide circle, primarily around the coast. ‘Must See’ locations, such as Cliffs of Moher, Kilkenny Castle, Ring of Kerry, Killarney, the ‘Quiet Man’ country of Connemara, and more will be interspersed with lesser known local gems, such as Cobh, Doolin, the Aran Island of Inish Mor, and New Grange.

Luxurious Spa

Luxurious SpaOur small group tour of a week of pampering at Ixtapan de la Sal, Mexico is an experience you don't want to miss.

This family-owned and operated Spa has been in operation since the mid 19th century and is the most relaxing and beautiful place one can imagine. And it’s a great bargain!

Spain

Tours of Andalucia, Spain

This small group tour of Spain is an in-depth exploration of a most treasured region - ANDALUCIA!

Rich in Spanish traditions influenced by the ancient Moors, sunshine, olive groves, white pueblo villages, tapas, Sangria... Spain's Andalucia contains all this and more, and we will have two weeks to enjoy it to the fullest!

Highlights include three guided tours, a visit and show at the famous Andalucian Equestrian School, and an authentic Flamenco Show at an intimate, locally owned establishment. Two meals are included daily, as well as rental cars, including gas.

Lodging will be in Haciendas and hotels, conveniently located within walking distance of historic city centers, shops and attractions. Three 4-night stays help make this an in-depth experience and adventure you don’t want to miss!

Tuscany

Tours to TuscanyStaying in a villa on a small group tour of Tuscany is one of the least expensive, and perhaps most rewarding, travel experiences one can enjoy.

We stay one week each in two villas, which are strategically chosen for convenient day trips throughout central Tuscany. First is Borgo Corsignano, a renovated medieval village in the lovely Casentino Valley. Our second villa is San Giuseppe, near Sienna, a big, old restored farmhouse with six bedrooms (all with ensuite bathrooms).

Summary

Zebras

Our two-week, small group Safari in Kenya, during migration will in itself be a trip of a lifetime. If you also add one, or both, of the pre- or post-trips, I promise it will surpass any travel experience you have ever had. Game drives, and one of the largest waterfalls in the world, and game viewing on foot, and sunset cruises, and game viewing by canoe, exciting small charter plane flights, and highest sand dunes in the world, and shopping, and wonderful meals, and relaxation, and game drives in Land Rovers, and birding on land and by boat, and so much more. Oh yes, and did I mention game drives?

We begin our Kenya Safari with one night in Nairobi, before heading out early the next morning, going north through coffee estates, past the Del Monte pineapple plantations and the many flower farms, one of Kenya's major exports, waiting to glimpse a view of the breathtakingly beautiful Mt. Kenya.

Next, it's on to Samburu, Elementeita, and Mara camps, an exciting 11 days, in which we will enjoy twice-daily game drives in some of the most prolific wildlife reserves in the world, capped off with the opportunity of enjoying the exciting migration.

Victoria FallsOur pre-trip 10-day adventure (which can be done separately) begins in Victoria Falls, where we will enjoy a Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi River, a Helicopter Flyover of the Falls (largest in the world), a walk-around at Victoria Falls Hotel, shopping at the local Craft Market, and a traditional township cuisine lunch at Mama Africa Eating House. We begin our game drive activities as we are driven across the border into Botswana where we will be flown by private charter from Kasane into the Okavango Delta and on to Camp Okavango, where we will spend three days immersed in walking, canoeing, and motor boat game drives. The Okavango Delta is one of the greatest birding areas in the world. We will stay in permanent African-style safari tents on a permanent island of the Delta. Trust me, Boy Scout camping this is not. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with tiled bathrooms and modern fixtures, plus exciting animal calls, grunts, and noises serenading throughout the night, as they often come very close to the tents.

Fish Eagle

Camp O in BotswanaOn we go, again by small charter plane, to Camp Xakanaxa for our final three days in Botswana, with a land-based safari experience, including game drives to view elephants, lions, leopards, antelope, the elusive African wild dog, and so much more. Our entire Botswana experience is all-inclusive, with activities, meals, even alcoholic beverages on-the-house. The Delta camps are very exclusive, accommodating just 24 guests each. Meals are served buffet style, and evenings are spent in intimate boma-style public areas surrounding huge fire pits, after viewing the spectacular African sunsets.

Zebra Etosha Namibia

Sossusvle Dunes Namibia

Finally, those deciding to do the 8-Day Namibia extension will be treated to a different, unique experience in the Sossusvlei desert featuring the famous red, and tallest, sand dunes in the world, and Etosha National Park – protecting more than 100 species of mammal, 16 species of reptile and amphibian, and an incredible 340 species of birds – and Etosha Pan, a vast, flat, saline desert, with watering hole oases drawing a huge variety of animals. First the dunes of Sossusvlei, then to the watering holes for an unusual and fascinating culmination to our time in Southern Africa. A tour of Windhoek (the capital of Namibia) at the beginning of this extension, is an additional highlight.

The basic Kenya Migration Safari is two weeks. You may do this alone, or with one or both of the extensions. Victoria Falls/Botwana is a 10-Day pre-trip extension, and can be done alone. Namibia can also be done alone, or added to the basic Kenya Migration Safari.

Day 10-13

Here is where we can see the big cats -- lions, cheetah, and so much more, up close and personal. Hippos, and impala, and even more birds. We are now deep in migration country... we will see wildebeest and zebras by the thousands, and our guides will begin keeping their ear to the ground and employing their honed experience and instinct to detect the possibility of a crossing.

This is what we're here for. The migration should be at full steam. The big cats are in abundance, and we can watch them resting between kills, or playing with their cubs. Or we now view Lions and hyenas at kill sites, and vying for room are magnificent vultures of all variety.

Eka Hotel, Nairobi

Trip Advisor: 4 Stars (125 Excellent, 224 Very Good)

There are very few things that you can say wrong about the Eka. As a hotel, it ticks all of the boxes. Staff, cleanliness, food, hospitality and location, all very good indeed. The restaurant was great with a very good menu and they have a Spur steakhouse attached to the premises too. I would definitely recommend...

Samburu Game Lodge, Samburu

Trip Advisor: 4 1/2 Stars (41 Excellent, 19 Good)

Reviewed January 15, 2015

Samburu N.R. is a beautiful safari destination and this lodge is a very nice place to stay. Ours was birthday celebration and the staff was very accommodating and enthusiastic in making it a special one for our son. No vast herds, but plenty of unique animal life, some of which we have not seen at other parks. One of our favorite wildlife areas, not frequented as much as others to the south. Definitely a keeper.

"My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The rooms were clean well serviced even had water bottles to keep the blanket warm. The meals were incredible too, from the presentation to the variety to the service. We loved the seclusion, i think any couple will enjoy their time here. Wish we had the time to take the nature walks closer to the lake."

"Amazing place with amazing views. The rooms/tents were very spacious. The food was really good and the service was really good. I would highly recommend it, and wish to go back soon. The breakfast by the lake was an amazing experience."

Little Mara Bush Camp

Trip Advisor: 5 Stars (38 Excellent, 2 Very Good)

5 of 5 starsReviewed November 4, 2014

"We have spent really beautiful days between October 13th and 17th in this nice camp and had very exciting game drives into the Masai Mara. Already after the warm welcome through Michaela and Nelson the camp managers, we felt like home. The place is fantastically situated just beside the river with outlook from most tents directly to the Hipos and crocodiles there. The overall impression is top and also the kitchen chief contributed a lot to long lasting memories. And we saw all the Big Five and even impressive river crossings of thousands of Wildebeests (Gnus).
Thanks a lot to Michaela and Nelson and also the whole team."

PRE-TRIP - VICTORIA FALLS/BOTSWANA

African Rock Hotel - 2 Nights (one at the beginning and one at the end)

Trip Advisor: 4 ½ Stars (174 Excellent, 25 Very Good)

This exclusive boutique hotel is located 11 km from the Johannesburg International Airport, O.R. Tambo in a quiet suburb of Kempton Park away from the flight path of arriving and departing planes.

Reviewed July 2015

"Imagine, if you can, a hotel mere minutes away from Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport where the loudest ambient noise you hear is bird song. That's the case at African Rock, a boutique hotel in the Kempton Park district that is a true gem. The rooms, at least ours (which let onto the pool and garden area) and our traveling companions', were large and tastefully furnished. The reception staff was courteous, professional and patient, even with my habitual difficulty in downloading and printing airline boarding passes.
" And the meals -- we took breakfast and dinner -- which were explained and prepared by the talented and resourceful Chef Christine, were perfect in every respect. She very capably provided for our vegan dietary needs while simultaneously preparing sumptuous meals for our omnivorous companions.
African Rock is a hit. Give it a try."

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge – 2 Nights

Trip Advisor: 4 ½ Stars (570 Excellent, 278 Very Good)

Set high on a natural plateau, the westward facing Victoria Falls Safari Lodge borders the Zambezi National Park and is just four kilometers from the thundering Victoria Falls. Enjoying uninterrupted views of spectacular Africa sunsets and year round game at its on-site waterhole, accommodation at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is ideally positioned to offer the most discerning traveler a taste of Africa at its best.

Reviewed July 2015

"It would be hard for anything to compare favorably with the magnificence of Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), but the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge succeeds. Absolutely impeccable service by every staff member; wonderful meals, both in the lodge restaurant and at the Boma; clean comfortable rooms that overlook a reasonably wild area (from our balcony we could see fifteen elephants at the waterhole); warthogs (one of my favorite African animals) wandering the grounds; and the a cappella singing group Insizwa delighting you in the dining areas each night. The lodge also provides a convenient shuttle service taking you into the "town" and to the entrance of the Falls (the reason you go there in the first place). You can't ask for more."

Camp Okavango, Botswana - 3 Nights

Trip Advisor: 4 1/2 Stars (102 Excellent, 28 Very Good)

Enchanting Camp Okavango sits at the heart of the permanent Okavango Delta on Nxaragha Island.

In November 2015 it will close and be totally rebuilt, reopening on 14 April 2016. Stunning public areas accessed by raised walkways will be linked with the new luxury suites boasting expansive views right across the Okavango Delta. The new Camp Okavango will consist of eleven guest suites and one family suite. Room structures will encompass a blend of timber and canvas, ensuring that the best use of ventilation and light can be achieved. All rooms will be raised off the ground ensuring that each room enjoys a unique view of the Okavango Delta ecosystem. Rooms will be accessed via raised decks, which all lead to the main camp public areas. The standard rooms will encompass a foyer and lounge, large bedroom area and en suite bathroom containing double vanity, double shower and separate toilet. Expansive decks will lead out from both the lounge and bedroom areas. The public areas will be uniquely built to ensure that expansive views of the Okavango Delta can be utilized.

The main area, which wil include a lounge and bar, separate dining area, library and computer room, curio shop and various areas for guests to relax, will be built on the site and to the front of the current Okavango Suite.

Expansive decks, with a fireplace and stargazing decks will lead off from this towards the jetty from where most activities depart and arrive.

All game viewing activities are conducted by experienced guides and include exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro (canoe) and motorboat, and tracking the larger game species on guided nature walks on the many surrounding islands. This camp is very exclusive, as it accommodates only 24 guests.

Note from Ihla: The following review was posted before the rebuild. I have personally stayed at this camp three times in the past, and it was just as the reviewer describes. During my last visit, in 2014, the rooms did seem like they could use some sprucing up, but I was surprised to hear of this total rebuild. I will watch for reviews and post them here as they come in, and we can all look forward to experiencing the new 'digs' for ourselves. When photos become available I will replace those below.

"We recently spent a few days at Camp Okavango during our honeymoon and this turned out to be our favourite stay. The staff were fantastic. They made a real effort to come and introduce themselves and get to know you. It's a very personal experience, all sitting together (including guides) to eat. You are made to feel very welcome and there is nothing that is too much to ask. The guides are incredibly knowledgable and do their best to ensure you have a good time.
The 'rooms'/tents are on par with hotel standard and are very clean and well presented/equipped. Would definitely recommend a stay here."

Camp Xakanaxa - 3 Nights

Trip Advisor: 4 1/2 Stars (102 Excellent, 28 Very Good)

An elegant, elevated thatch and timber structure serves as the main building comprising a main sitting area, wildlife reference library, dining room and cocktail bar inviting a true sense of the African wilderness. Other facilities include a secluded swimming pool with sundeck and thatched boma where brunch and high tea are served. Accommodating guests in African-style safari tents, each individually sited on a raised teak platform with private adjacent facilities and viewing deck, most offering unsurpassed views of the Xakanaxa Lagoon. Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, both in the morning and late afternoons, offer frequent sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah as well as wild dog. Alternatively, guests can explore the Xakanaka Lagoon and surrounding Okavango channels by motorboat. This camp is very exclusive, as it accommodates only 24 guests.

"Our second camp and we were welcomed by warm and friendly staff......lovely large tent with very comfortable bed with all the comforts of home, including bathroom facilities.....the sitting area outside the tent was just superb with views out over the waterway....at night the stars and Milky Way where astounding. Large restaurant by waterway with dinner service being candlelit with good wholesome cooking and a great menu. All the staff here cannot do enough for you and their 'vocals' at dinner were truly impressive. The open bar had a wide range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. There are two boma's and guests gather around after dinner,. The game drives were outstanding with Banda, our guide, doing all possible to find the big 5 with great success including finding us some 'lucky beads'. Game drives included 4x4 wading and waterway excursions with sundowner drinks on large quiet and flat water lake...amazing. At night the haunting sound of the hippo's call, and hearing them grazing nearby was magical and not to be missed. The views over the waterway at sunrise, as night ended and morning began, will move the most stoney-hearted to wonder at natures brilliance. Elephants, giraffes, lions, zebra and all wildlife abound here. A true feeling of being away from it all pervades this lovely venue. Do not concern yourself with your mobile phone calls, texts or emails......they just don't work in such a remote area.....we did not miss them at all!"

POST-TRIP EXTENSION - NAMIBIA

Olive Grove Guesthouse, Namibia – 2 Nights (one at the beginning and one at the end)

Trip Advisor: 4 Stars (131 Excellent, 113 Very Good)

Olive Grove is a small upmarket accommodation establishment situated close to Windhoek city centre in a quiet, peaceful area. Recently completely refurbished, each room has been decorated and painted with new colour schemes allowing a different feel, but with the same elegant and simplistic emphasis on décor.

The newly renovated, open-plan kitchen allows guests to see how meals are prepared, while they enjoy a drink in the lounge. The menu was also reinvented and is now fully a la carte, quite unique for a guesthouse. Home-style food is rounded off with great presentation, pushing up the level of the guesthouse dining experience. The upper deck has been revamped into a private dining corner, with two Moroccan-style sections, for guests to get comfy on the large pillows and enjoy the ambience and view from the top.

The on-site Wellness Room offers a selection of professional services, to assist guests on their journey towards inner and outer well-being.

Whilst each of the ten rooms and one suite cater for every need of the most discerning traveller, the emphasis remains one of simplicity and elegance

Situated adjacent to the oldest desert in the worldSossusvlei Lodge is a luxurious retreat in this premier tourist attraction area in Namibia. Shaded by camel thorn trees, the Lodge blends in perfectly with the spectacular desert surrounds and bears testament to the ingenuity of an eco-friendly design.

The al fresco terrace offers magnificent views of the floodlit waterhole where you can watch the passing parade of oryx, springbok, jackal, ground squirrel and hyena, whilst enjoying exquisite food and wine. Indeed a visual and culinary contrast, bearing in mind the relative remoteness of this exceptional location.

"Everything of this Lodge was wonderful... the service was super, the dinner was excellent, the nature behind the tents was great! Unfortunately we had a stay of two nights - it's too short. We'll come back again - and then longer!!"

"Amazing Place" - Reviewed June 2015

"After camping for a few days, showing up here was like a dream. Unfortunately we only stayed one night, because the place was really lovely. The rooms are gorgeous, the food was amazing. Sitting at the pool right near the waterhole, and seeing Giraffes and all kinds of animals was such a treat.
"We also did a night drive and saw a ton of stuff, including a Lion and her week-old cubs! Such a lucky treat. Everything about Onguma was wonderful, friendly staff, wonderful setting, and again the food was really really good.

We will help you book, finding the best fares possible (pairing with your international flight where possible). A quote will be provided at time of booking, and you will either pay directly with your credit card or be billed at actual cost on your Final Payment Invoice.
To give you a general idea, in addition to your international fight (which could be as low as $1,000 or as high as $2,000, but most likely somewhere in between), here are the fares as of Aug 2015:
*Pre-Trip: ~$900 ($400 Jo-burg to Vic Falls & Maun to Jo-burg + $500 Jo-burg to Nairobi)
**Post-Trip ~$820 ($500 Nairobi to Jo-burg + $320 RT Jo-burg/Windhoek)

NOTES:

1. Both Namibia and Botswana are very expensive, and we are staying at premium hotels and lodges. Both Camp Okavango and Camp Xakanaxa hold only 24 guests. Because of this, they are quite exclusive, and can charge a premium (and in my opinion worth every penny for the hospitality, adventure and unique experiences they provide).
